Family Guide to Home Care Services

Answers to Your Most Common Questions

Choosing home care for a loved one is an important decision, and families come to us with a lot of questions. This guide will provide you some answers so you can feel confident throughout your decision making process.

What Is Home Care & How It Works

Home care provides professional support for daily living, right in the comfort of your loved one’s own home. It’s non-medical assistance that helps people live safely and independently, whether they’re aging in place or managing a long-term condition.

These two terms are often confused, but they’re different services:

  • Home care (what we provide) is non-medical support: help with bathing, dressing, meals, errands, and companionship.
  • Home health care involves licensed medical professionals (nurses, therapists) delivering clinical treatment at home.

Home care is a good fit for adults who:

  • Want to remain at home rather than move to a facility
  • Need help with daily tasks but do not require 24/7 medical care
  • Have family caregivers who need relief and support

Costs & Insurance

Costs vary depending on the number of hours, type of services, and care schedule. We provide a clear, transparent rate before any services begin. No surprises. Contact us for current pricing and to discuss what fits your budget.

Coverage depends on your loved one’s insurance plan. Common options include:

  • MaineCare (Medicaid): Maine’s Medicaid program covers home care services for eligible individuals.
  • Long-term care insurance: Often covers non-medical home care. We can help verify your benefits.
  • Veterans’ benefits: Eligible veterans may qualify for home care assistance through the VA.
  • Private pay: Some families pay out-of-pocket. We’ll work with you to design a plan that fits your budget.

Note: Standard Medicare does not cover non-medical home care.

How to Get Started

 Here’s what to expect:

  • Initial call: We learn about your loved one’s needs and answer your questions.
  • Care assessment: We discuss a care plan for their daily routine and preferences.
  • Caregiver matching: We pair your loved one with a caregiver who is a good personal and practical fit.
  • Care begins: Services start on a schedule that works for your family.

In many cases, we can begin services within a few days of your initial inquiry. If your situation is urgent, let us know and we will do everything we can to accommodate your timeline.

What Caregivers Do (and Don’t Do)

Our caregivers assist with a wide range of daily living needs, including:

  • Personal care: bathing, grooming, dressing, and hygiene
  • Meal preparation and light kitchen cleanup
  • Light housekeeping and laundry
  • Transportation and errand assistance
  • Medication reminders (not administration)
  • Companionship, conversation, and social engagement

Our caregivers are not licensed medical professionals. They are not able to:

  • Administer medications, injections, or IV treatments
  • Perform wound care, catheter changes, or clinical procedures
  • Provide diagnosis or medical advice

If your loved one has clinical needs, we can help connect you with home health or medical providers who work alongside our services.

Safety, Supervision & Oversight

Every caregiver we place goes through a thorough vetting process that includes:

  • Criminal background check
  • Reference verification
  • Skills and competency assessment
  • Ongoing performance reviews

Our management team provides ongoing supervision to ensure care quality and address any concerns quickly. You’ll always have a direct point of contact if something comes up.

A good caregiver match matters. If something isn’t working in terms of personality, scheduling, or approach to care, please tell us. We will work to find a better fit. Your loved one’s comfort and your family’s peace of mind come first.

We maintain a team of caregivers so coverage gaps are minimized. If your regular caregiver is unavailable, we will notify you as early as possible and work to send a qualified backup.

Communication with Families

We believe families should never feel out of the loop. You can expect:

  • Prompt communication if anything changes or a concern arises
  • An open door to reach us any time you have questions

Yes, and we encourage it. You know your loved one best. Family input is welcomed during the initial assessment and throughout the care relationship.

You’ll have a direct point of contact on our management team. Please don’t hesitate to reach out. Early communication makes everything easier to address.
